Instructors
Daniel Jackson (Lecturer)
I’m a prof of computer science. My research is about software design, with a focus on usability, safety, privacy and security. I taught this class for the first time in 2011, taking inspiration from 6.170, a project class that Barbara Liskov and John Guttag taught (and that I TA’d!) back in the 1980s. Over the last few years, Arvind and I have been boosting the design component of the class, which is our passion (as 6.031 has covered more of the basic tech). When I’m not teaching or doing research, I’m taking photos (https://dnj.photo), and I write a resilience postcard every month (or so) that you can subscribe to. I always enjoy getting to know students, so do get in touch to chat about anything (or just to come by!).
Arvind Satyanarayan (Lecturer)
Hi folks, I’m Arvind (he/him) and a faculty member in computer science. I lead the MIT Visualization Group where we study various aspects of data visualization including developing new tools for authoring visualizations, applying visualization to interpret machine learning models, and studying how to make visualizations accessible to blind and low vision people. I’m excited for our semester together because Daniel and I have spent a lot of time rethinking how to better distill the core idea of this class: design is a critical part of computer science, and good design requires just as much rigor analysis, creativity, and thoughtfulness as algorithmic implementation. I’m looking forward to getting to know you all — please don’t be a stranger, and feel free to reach out if you’d ever like to chat (about the class, or other things more generally)!
Fabrizzio Orderique (UTA)
Hey everyone, I’m Fabrizzio - a 6-3 senior. I loved 6.1040 and I’m looking forward to helping out this semester. I’m involved with the Latino Cultural Center (LCC) and Club Peru. Outside of school, I love swimming at the Z, watching movies, and trying different restaurants around Boston. Looking forward to meeting everyone!
Grace Huang (TA)
Hi! I’m Grace (she/hers), and I’m a senior and MEng student studying 6-3 and doing my thesis in the Visualization Group with Professor Satyanarayan! In my spare time, I enjoy listening to and making music (shoutout to MIT Syncopasian), drawing, cooking, baking, and learning Taekwondo. I’m super excited to get to know all of you this semester!
An Bo Chen (UTA)
Hi everyone, I’m An Bo! I’m a 6-3 senior with an interest in designing, writing, and testing software applications. Last year I took 6.1040 (6.170) and it encouraged me to view software design in a more intricate and rigorous manner. In my freetime, I workout at the Z, hang out with friends, and chill (nothing too crazy). Looking forward to meeting and working with you all this semester!
Zachary Johnson (TA)
Howdy everyone! My name is Zach, and I’m so excited to be one of your TAs this semester! A little about me — I graduated as a 6-3 in 2022 and worked full time as a SWE for a year in Seattle, where I became the most stereotypical PNW person you will ever meet #teamchacos. In my free time I love to run (catch me running the Boston Marathon this spring!), hike (pictured, duh), backpack, camp, ski, and do pretty much anything else outside (told ya I was stereotypical). I took 6.1040 back in Fall 2021 when it was still 6.170, and I can’t wait to work with you all this semester!
Isabella Pedraza Pineros (TA)
Hey there, I’m Isabella! A little bit about me – I love learning new languages, drinking coffee, and playing golf. I’m currently an MEng student focused on accessibility research at the MIT Visualization Group. I can’t wait to get you know you all!
Ashley Granquist (TA)
Hi! I’m Ashley and I’m an MEng student (6-3 undergrad). In addition to computer science, I love playing the violin, figure skating, visiting museums and gardens, and spending time outdoors. I took this class last fall and I’m super excited to be a TA for the class this semester and meet all of you!
Abutalib (Barish) Namazov (UTA)
Hey! My name is Barish and I’m a 6-3 senior. I have grown to like a lot of different things around computer science during my time here, but I am now trying to put more time into exploring the problems with the traditional ways we develop software and attempting to solve them. This class is a nice and fun start for that! Outside classes, I sometimes make events in VGA and OpenCode (OpenCode is still work in progress) with my wonderful friends. I hope you share our excitement to work together in this class!
Elisa Jacobo (UTA)
Hi everyone! I’m Elisa, and I’m currently a senior in 6-3. I took this class last year and am really excited to join the teaching staff this semester! When I’m not busy psetting, I enjoy reading, playing on my Nintendo Switch, and visiting new places. Fun fact: My family’s dog has been to more than 10 U.S. states!
Lyel Resner (Guest Lecturer)
Hi Everyone! I’m Lyel. I am a technologist, entrepreneur, and advisor. My expertise is in building products and teams to help ensure that technology and media create a more just and sustainable future for everyone. I am currently Visiting Faculty at Cornell Tech where I am the Head of the Public Interest Technology Studio, am a Fellow at the MIT Civic Data Lab, and co-lead the Startups & Society Initiative. I studied Physics and Political Science here at MIT and am thrilled to be back as a Guest Lecturer this year! I am an avid if marginally competent surfer, and enjoy guava soda and air-drumming on the subway. I live on the beach in New York City.
