Heuristic Comparison of Google and Yahoo as a User Interface
I found it interesting to compare these two search engines with the terms that we have learned in the lecture. I was curious to analize why Yahoo has lost its popularity in the recent years.
Learnability
I remember using Google since I was maybe at first grade of elementary school. My dad introduced Google to me, and I never needed to ask any question to learn how to use it. Also, the same is true about Yahoo. Both search engines are easy to learn and to use.
Efficiency
In my opinion, Yahoo is actually more efficient because if you want to search about weather, there is a block already on the homepage for forcast. As you can personalize your homepage, users have quick access to the content that they might search for on the homepage.
Error Tolerance
Both search engings are error tolerant. If a user makes a mistake to type in their query, they will be able to modify their query quickly. If they close their tabs by mistake, again they uses the history to restore their search.
Pleasantness
This is really user dependent. Google has a minimalist design which I enjoy because there are less distractions. However, some users might prefer to be able to design their homepage, and Yahoo gives that option to the users.
Safety
Google has been doing a better job to warn people regarding the content of the results of research.
Security
In terms of security, Google is generally considered more robust and trustworthy, offering secure data transmission with HTTPS, a strong focus on privacy controls, and a better track record in handling data breaches. They provide two-factor authentication, security checkup tools, and regular updates to address vulnerabilities. On the other hand, Yahoo also employs HTTPS and offers two-factor authentication, but it has faced notable data breaches in the past.
Accessibility
Google offers various accessibility features such as Voice Access for hands-free control, keyboard shortcuts, screen reader compatibility, and detailed documentation on accessible practices. Google has made a concerted effort to improve the user experience for those with disabilities. Yahoo also provides accessibility features but may not have the same level of commitment and comprehensive accessibility tools compared to Google, potentially making it a less accessible option for users with disabilities.
