Blog 3- Lecture 4

Instagram's IGTV Design Flaw

After hearing and reading about different design flaws, I was inspired to write a blog about Instagram's "IGTV" feature.

When Instagram first introduced IGTV, a platform for long-form video content, it was housed in a separate app. This created a disjointed experience for users who were accustomed to accessing all of their content within the main Instagram app, which meant users had to download and switch between two different apps to use Instagram and IGTV. This created a barrier to entry and disrupted the seamless experience that Instagram was known for.

How they fixed it:

In response to user feedback and to improve the user experience, Instagram decided to integrate IGTV directly into the main Instagram app. This was done by incorporating a prominent IGTV button within the main interface, allowing users to access and browse IGTV content without leaving the Instagram app.

This led to improvement in 3 areas.

Streamlining User Experience: By integrating IGTV into the main app, Instagram made it much easier for users to discover, watch, and engage with long-form video content without the need for a separate app.

Increasing Accessibility: The integration made IGTV more accessible to a broader user base, as it eliminated the need for users to download and navigate a separate application.

Maintaining Visual Consistency: By keeping IGTV within the Instagram app, the overall visual aesthetic and user interface remained consistent, providing a more cohesive experience for users.

This change not only broadened IGTV's audience but also increased overall user engagement, as individuals were more inclined to explore and interact with this type of content within the familiar Instagram environment. The decision also ensured a seamless visual experience, reducing the need for users to adapt to a new interface. By retaining users within their ecosystem, Instagram not only captured and maintained user attention but also opened up new avenues for monetization and revenue generation. This integration ultimately contributed to a more cohesive, engaging, and profitable platform for Instagram.
